Whitecross Market EC1

Being the foodie journalists (in training) that we are, we thought we would share our latest favourite eatery, Whitecross MarketLocated conveniently just off Old Street, this street feast has pretty much every cuisine you could possibly desire at lunchtime.
It’s one of the oldest street markets in London, transformed from grotty to gourmet in recent years. Here are a few of our personal favourite picks…

For the meat lover…

The Wild Game Co.
Serving juicy pink venison steaks served in toasted buns with a dash of mustard, lettuce & cheesy-onions, this stand usually has one of the longest queues. Winners of this year’s Street Food Of The Year at The Young British Foodies Awards, these guys are also up for a BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Award.

The Roast of Sherwood
Every Thursday & Friday, these meat fiends serve up a great hog roast, served up on sundried tomato focaccia with any sauce of your choice. If your a condiment fan, this is your chance to combine mustard with apple sauce and BBQ sauce, all in one bap.

For the health-conscious…

Soppka
If you’re looking for a winter warmer, then Soppka’s squash & apple cider soup is perfect. It comes with E5 Bakehouse bread on the side and a free range sausage for an extra £1, if you’re hungry!

For Michelin Star quality…

Green Goat
Don’t expect to find any tuna from this converted 90s school bus. They serve fresh sustainable fish in all forms – last week was pollock curry served on coconut rice with flatbread and mango & coriander salsa. It was co-founded by Claude Compton of Michelin-starred restaurant Petersham Nurseries, so you can definitely expect good things.

For vegetarian curry…

Karuna
Three vegetarian curries come with rice, naan, pickle and chutney – as well as an onion bhaji and samosa – all for a fiver. There’s a good level of spice too, so it won’t leave you feeling disappointed…

For burrito connoisseurs…

Luardos

There’s nothing worse than a bland burrito. Thankfully, Luardos have perfected the chilli to guacamole to cheese ratio and combined it in one excellent wrap. Watch out – this one can be a bit messy!

If you’re a dessert person..

Galeta

Stacks of cookies that will melt in your mouth and slabs of chocolate brownie that are enough to keep you full for the rest of the day (we’ll be impressed if you can eat a whole one in one sitting.) Grab one of these for the walk back…

HANDY TIP: You can eat your purchases in The Two Brewers pub, hassle-free, as long as you buy a drink…
